Meteorology Department Director Sinan Güneş announced that the installation of the Automatic Weather Observation System (AWOS) at Ercan Airport has been completed. Güneş stated that the system is expected to be operational within 15 days.
Tests Progressing Smoothly
Güneş noted that with the activation of AWOS, which is installed at standard-compliant locations along the runway to continuously and accurately monitor weather conditions, a “very significant” milestone will be reached at Ercan Airport. According to a statement from the Ministry, the system’s tests have progressed without any issues so far.
Advanced Meteorological Parameter Monitoring
AWOS will instantly and accurately report meteorological parameters such as ground temperature, wind speed, humidity, pressure, and cloud base height from every point on the runway to the Airport Meteorology Office, Tower, and Approach Control Office. This will ensure that airport operations are conducted more safely and efficiently.
Upgrade to Category 2
With the system becoming operational, Güneş mentioned that Ercan Airport, which has been providing services at category 1 (CAT1) level for years, will be upgraded to category 2 (CAT2). This upgrade will significantly enhance flight safety and increase the operational capacity of the airport, allowing flights to be conducted in a much safer environment.
