National Defense Minister Güler: “We Have Changed Our Counterterrorism Strategy”

Minister of National Defense Yaşar Güler participated in a program on CNN Türk, making statements about cross-border operations and counterterrorism strategies.

Güler emphasized that the fight against terrorism originates from its source and operations will continue, stating that the PKK has settled in northern Iraq and has been launching attacks from this region for years.

He mentioned that the number of villages where the PKK has settled in Iraq has reached 800, which became apparent after the Iraqi government recognized them as a terrorist organization.

Güler also noted that even in regions controlled by the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) such as Sulaymaniyah, the PKK operates. He stated that they have warned relevant parties and called for the terrorists to be cleared from the region.

Cross-Border Operation and Counterterrorism Strategy

Güler explained that their cross-border operations and counterterrorism strategies are based on “eliminating terrorists at their source.” He emphasized that Turkey aims to eradicate terrorism at its roots through operations against terrorist organizations in northern Iraq.

Furthermore, Güler stated that 60,000 personnel are serving for Turkey’s border security, ensuring the protection of its borders, and affirmed that Turkey is prepared to counter any threat.

Eurofighter and the Cyprus Issue

Regarding the purchase of Eurofighter jets, Güler mentioned Germany’s reservations on some issues but expressed belief that these would be resolved soon. He also highlighted Turkey’s support for a solution to the Cyprus issue based on equal and sovereign states, emphasizing that the Turkish community voted “Yes” in the referendum, which the EU did not consider.

Güler underscored that Turkey is now an influential country in its region and has enhanced its capabilities, mentioning plans for the construction of a new aircraft carrier.
