In Hong Kong (China) airspace, a dangerous close encounter between two cargo planes drew attention in the aviation world. An Airbus A330-300 cargo plane, registered TC-MCN and operated by MNG Airlines, was conducting flight MB-380 from Hong Kong (China) to Istanbul (Turkey) when it began climbing to an altitude of approximately 2,500 feet after taking off from runway 07C to turn back onto its departure route.
At the same time, a Boeing 777-200 cargo plane, registered VP-BMU and operated by Silk Way Airlines, was performing flight 7L-625 from Hong Kong (China) to Baku (Azerbaijan). The aircraft was making a right turn at around 2,500 feet after departing from runway 07R when the crew received a descent resolution advisory from the TCAS (Traffic Collision Avoidance System) to maintain flight safety.
Dangerous Approach Within 800 Metres
According to ADS-B data, the vertical distance between the two planes dropped to zero, while the horizontal distance was approximately 800 metres (0.45 nautical miles). Despite the hazardous proximity, the TCAS system activated, and the planes separated safely in accordance with the crew’s received warnings.
Investigation Launched
The Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department (CAD) initiated a detailed investigation into the incident. Initial findings indicated that despite climb clearances issued by air traffic control (ATC), the desired vertical separation was not achieved due to differing climb rates. Authorities stated that both planes were following standard departure routes and maintained visual contact.
Following the incident, both planes safely reached their destinations without any issues.
