A Jet2 flight from Edinburgh Airport to Dalaman was forced to divert to Cologne, Germany, due to unruly behavior from intoxicated passengers. The flight, designated LS781, was redirected by pilots after passengers exhibited disruptive behavior.
German police were on standby to implement security measures upon the flight’s arrival, and the incident sparked significant reactions on social media. Stranded passengers reported that they were unable to take their return flights from Dalaman due to delays and were placed in hotels instead. One passenger remarked, “We were supposed to be on our flight home, but because the plane was diverted to Germany, we had to be accommodated in hotels.” Another passenger expressed frustration, stating, “This plane has stranded us in Dalaman!”
A Jet2 spokesperson confirmed that the aircraft was redirected to Cologne due to the negative behavior of the passengers. They noted that two individuals were removed by police and that the flight is expected to proceed to Dalaman, but passengers had to spend the night in Germany. Jet2 announced that they had arranged hotel accommodations and refreshments for the affected passengers.
The airline is known for taking strict measures against drunken passengers who cause flight diversions. In previous instances, disruptive individuals could be liable for the costs associated with rerouting the flight and could face lifetime bans from flying. Penalties can reach up to £80,000.
It is important to note that being intoxicated on a plane can lead to a fine of £5,000 or up to two years in prison. In cases that pose a security threat, imprisonment can extend up to five years.
The recent increase in the number of passengers resorting to violence during flights has raised concerns among airlines. The Civil Aviation Authority has warned that unruly passengers may be held responsible for the costs incurred by airlines when diverting flights.
This incident has reignited discussions about the need to reassess security measures within the aviation industry, with consultations expected between Jet2 and German federal police.
