The Ministry of Culture and Tourism announced that 6,923,768 foreign tourists visited Istanbul in the first five months of 2024. This figure marks the highest number of foreign visitors recorded for any year.
Russians Lead
A significant portion of foreign tourists visiting Istanbul were Russians. In May, Istanbul welcomed 1,678,832 foreign visitors, an 11.48% increase compared to the same month last year. The highest number of visitors came from the Russian Federation with 176,702 people, followed by Germany with 140,214 people, and the United States with 90,318 people. Visitor numbers from Iran, the United Kingdom, France, and Saudi Arabia were also high.
Istanbul Airport Preferred
In May, the majority of foreign visitors to Istanbul preferred Istanbul Airport. The airport hosted 1,198,723 foreign visitors, accounting for 72.85% of the total air travel visitor numbers. Sabiha Gökçen Airport ranked second with 445,225 foreign visitors. The total number of foreign visitors arriving in Istanbul by air increased by 12.09% compared to May 2023, reaching 1,645,423.
