The Syrian General Authority of Civil Aviation and Air Transport has announced that the comprehensive works being carried out to modernise the air navigation infrastructure at Damascus International Airport have reached their final stage.
In a written statement by the Authority, it was noted that within the scope of the project, which has been ongoing for more than two months, the installation of the automatic landing system (ILS) and the modern radar system is nearing completion. It was stated that the new technical infrastructure is planned to be brought into service within the next three to four weeks.
Operational Capacity to Increase in Foggy Conditions
Officials emphasised that the new systems to be installed will significantly increase the airport’s operational capacity and flight safety, particularly in foggy conditions and situations with low visibility. The statement also shared information that a similar modernisation project has been launched at Aleppo International Airport.
Dense Fog Affected Flights
It was stated that the dense fog waves affecting the country in recent days reduced visibility at Damascus International Airport below the operational limits permitted under international aviation standards, leading to delays and cancellations in some flight schedules.
The Authority stressed that the measures taken against adverse weather conditions are implemented within the framework of international standard safety procedures, underlining that passenger and flight safety is always the top priority.
Apology to Passengers, Coordination with Airlines Continues
In the statement, passengers were apologised to for delays and disruptions caused by fog, while it was announced that coordination with airline companies will continue until weather conditions improve and the new technical systems are commissioned, that necessary facilities will be provided to passengers, and that passenger rights will be safeguarded.
The Syrian General Authority of Civil Aviation and Air Transport had previously announced to the public that due to dense fog and low visibility, some flights from Damascus and Aleppo international airports were diverted to alternative airports or cancelled.
