In a statement from the Turkish Air Traffic Controllers Union, it was highlighted that Turkey is missing out on a substantial amount of foreign exchange income every year due to incorrect aviation policies. The statement mentioned, “Because the recommendations of the Court of Accounts are not being heeded, our country loses out on 1 billion euros of income annually. While aircraft using our airspace and airports pay us around 30 euros, this fee rises to approximately 80 euros in European countries.”
Significant Loss of Foreign Exchange
Turkey, which has one of the largest airspaces in the world, charges 30 euros per unit from airline companies using its airspace and airports, while this fee can go up to 80 euros in Europe. The Turkish Air Traffic Controllers Union made important evaluations regarding this issue in a press release about Turkish aviation.
“All Expenses Covered by EUROCONTROL”
The statement noted, “Because the recommendations of the Court of Accounts are not being heeded, our country loses out on 1 billion euros of income annually. While aircraft using our airspace and airports pay us around 30 euros, this fee rises to approximately 80 euros in European countries. Additionally, our Turkish air traffic controllers, who are not given their rightful benefits, are employed under the General Directorate of State Airports Authority. Their salaries, retirement premiums, services used, and training are all covered by EUROCONTROL, the European Organization for the Safety of Air Navigation, headquartered in Brussels, Belgium, of which our country is also a member. Although they place no burden on the state budget, they support the budget with the taxes deducted from their salaries.”
1.5 Billion TL Resource Potential
If the recommendations of the Court of Accounts are followed and controllers are given what they deserve, it is stated that an additional 1.5 billion TL could be provided to our country annually. Of this amount, 500 million TL would go directly to the treasury as taxes.
