Greece’s popular holiday island of Skiathos has made headlines—this time not for its stunning beaches, but due to a dangerous incident resulting from plane spotting. In the latest event, which took place just metres from the airport runway, two German tourists were swept off their feet by the jet blast of a departing aircraft. One of the tourists is reported to be in serious condition.
Only 20 metres between the beach and the runway
Skiathos, a gem of the Aegean Sea, draws aviation enthusiasts and social media users alike thanks to its airport’s proximity to the beach. However, this fascination results in recurring accidents and serious injuries every year. The distance between the runway and the beach is just 15 to 20 metres, creating a significant danger for tourists during aircraft take-offs and landings.
Two German female tourists injured in latest incident
According to Greek news portal Skiathoslife.gr, two young German women watching a plane take off from the edge of the runway were caught in the strong air turbulence from the jet engines and thrown about 10 metres. Eyewitnesses reported widespread panic at the scene, with some tourists falling to the ground.
One of the injured tourists was seriously hurt, while the other sustained minor injuries. Both were taken to the Skiathos Health Centre. The incident has once again highlighted the lack of adequate safety measures in the area.
Dangerous plane-spotting continues despite warning signs
Authorities have emphasised the serious risks posed by jet turbulence during aircraft take-offs and landings. Numerous signs warning against approaching the area at such times have been placed around the airport. Nonetheless, many tourists continue to risk their safety to capture videos and photos from dangerously close distances.
Similar accidents have happened before
This is not a new hazard. In 2019, a 12-year-old tourist was thrown 30 metres into the sea by the jet blast of a departing plane, sustaining serious injuries.
