The first F-35 Lightning II fighter jet for the Finnish Air Force, with tail number “JF-501,” has entered the production line at Lockheed Martin’s facility in Fort Worth, Texas. In 2021, Finland ordered 64 F-35 jets to replace its aging F/A-18 fleet. Finland’s first F-35 is expected to complete assembly and roll out of the hangar by fall 2025, with delivery to the Finnish Air Force anticipated by the end of 2026.
First F-35 Assembled with Electronic Integration System
At Lockheed Martin’s state-of-the-art production facility, the F-35 components are assembled with a high-precision electronic alignment system. This system integrates the jet’s front, center, and tail fuselage sections, as well as its wings, using lasers and sensors for millimeter-level precision. Finland’s first F-35 is undergoing the same meticulous process. During a visit to the facility on October 28, Finland F-35 Program Director and retired Colonel Henrik Elo marked this milestone by signing the front fuselage of Finland’s first F-35.
Training and Delivery Process: First Stop in the U.S., Then Finland
Before the initial delivery, Finland’s F-35s will be used for training at the Ebbing Air National Guard Base in the United States. Finnish pilots and technical teams will travel to this Arkansas base for training on the aircraft’s technology, flight, and maintenance. Following this training, Finland’s first F-35 squadron will be transferred to Finland in 2026 and stationed at Rovaniemi Airport in the north, joining the 11th Squadron of the Lapland Air Wing. By 2028, deliveries to the Karelia Air Wing at Kuopio Airport will also begin.
F-35 Enhanced with TR-3 Package
The F-35A Lightning II jets ordered by Finland will be delivered with the Technology Refresh 3 (TR-3) package, featuring advanced hardware and software. The TR-3 upgrade boosts the F-35’s processing power, enabling the integration of future sensors, weapons, and technologies. This feature will allow Finland’s F-35 fleet to quickly adapt to high-tech requirements.
In his statement at the Fort Worth facility, Henrik Elo said, “We are pleased to develop our F-35’s capabilities as planned. The front fuselage signature event is a small but symbolically significant step in the production process of the aircraft fleet.”
Finland’s F-35 Choice and Regional Security
By selecting the F-35, Finland aims to enhance its air defense capabilities. These jets will replace the F/A-18 Hornet fleet, playing a critical role in securing Finnish airspace with advanced combat technology. Finland’s strategic choice aligns with its NATO membership process and regional security policy.
