The UK Ministry of Defence announced that the drone attack on the Akrotiri base in the Republic of Cyprus on 2 March did not originate from Iran. The drones directed at the base were intercepted, and there were no casualties.
On the night of 2 March, RAF Akrotiri Base in the RoC was targeted by a Shahid-type drone. The drone that hit the base did not cause any casualties or significant material damage. Two other drones heading towards the base were intercepted.
The incident occurred at Akrotiri base on 2 March. The base holds strategic importance as one of the UK’s two bases on the island.
In its statement, the UK Ministry of Defence noted that F-35B and Typhoon jets carried out night flights to protect British interests and allied bases in the region. It also announced that Wildcat helicopters with drone-counter capabilities would be deployed to Cyprus in the coming days.
The Ministry stated that the base’s defence systems have been reinforced and that coordinated measures have been taken with other regional bases. Confirmation that the drone attack did not come from Iran has limited speculation regarding the source of the incident.
