The fight against climate change at global airports is gaining momentum. According to the latest report announced by the Airports Council International, while 590 airports reduced their carbon emissions, more than half of the world’s passenger traffic passed through these environmentally friendly airports.
590 Airports Included in the Carbon Programme
According to the data announced by the Airports Council International, within the scope of the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme:
- 590 airports in 91 countries and regions were accredited
- 104 new airports joined the programme for the first time
- More Than Half of the World’s Passengers Passed Through “Green” Airports
According to the report, accredited airports:
- Handled 53.6% of global passenger traffic
The announced rate showed that more than half of passengers travelling worldwide used airports implementing carbon management practices.
Notable Decrease in Carbon Emissions
Accredited airports significantly improved their environmental performance:
- 542,559 tonnes of CO₂e emission reduction
- An 8.1% decrease (Scope 1 and 2)
Additionally, 21 airports:
- Reached the net zero emissions target (Level 5)
- Committed to achieving net zero in Scope 3 emissions by 2050
Emissions Per Passenger Declined
The report also highlighted efficiency improvements:
- Emissions per passenger: 1.54 kg CO₂e
- Emissions per traffic unit: 1.34 kg CO₂e
These figures indicate:
- A 30.6% decrease on a passenger basis
- A 26.8% decrease on a traffic basis
“Airports Are Determined in Climate Action”
In his statement, Olivier Jankovec emphasized airports’ commitment to climate targets.
Jankovec stated that despite increasing political and economic challenges, the sector is progressing with determination, and that airports view carbon reduction not only as an environmental responsibility but also as a strategic necessity.
A New Era in Sustainable Aviation
The data announced in the 16th year of Airport Carbon Accreditation revealed that the global aviation sector has reached a stronger position in the fight against climate change.
The report showed that airports have managed to reduce carbon emissions despite increasing passenger traffic. Sustainability in global aviation has become a mandatory criterion for the future of the sector.
