“Retaliation” Concerns Among Pilots
Ron Hay, President of the International Federation of Air Line Pilots’ Associations, stated that pilots are under serious pressure, saying, “There is a strong fear of retaliation in the background.”
According to Hay, pilots operating across a wide geography from Lebanon to India are making flight decisions cautiously due to rapidly changing security conditions.
Airspace Can Be Closed Suddenly
Increasing missile and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) threats in the region can lead to airspace closures within a short time. This situation creates significant uncertainty in flight planning while also increasing pilots’ perception of risk.

Hay, who is also a captain at Delta Air Lines, stated that some pilots face the threat of income loss even if they are not directly dismissed.
Noting that pressures such as “If you don’t go on the flight, you don’t get paid” are being voiced, Hay said this situation has sparked a serious ethical and safety debate in the sector.

It is noteworthy that many pilots in the region avoid speaking out, even on condition of anonymity. According to experts, this situation reveals the extent of the pressure environment in the sector.
Especially in Gulf countries where union organization is limited, it is stated that pilots have weak mechanisms to seek their rights and therefore prefer to remain silent.
