On January 5th, three Black passengers on an American Airlines flight from Arizona to New York claimed they were removed from the plane. Passengers Alvin Jackson, Emmanuel Jean Joseph, and Xavier Veal stated that they were told they were being removed because they “smelled,” asserting that this was an act of racial discrimination.
The passengers said, “American Airlines segregated us, embarrassed us, and demeaned us because we are Black.” Statements regarding the incident revealed that a white flight attendant mentioned an unidentified passenger had complained about body odor, and this was the reason the Black passengers were removed from the plane.
Allowed Back on the Plane After No Alternative Flight Was Found
Efforts were made to arrange another flight for the passengers heading in the same direction, but when no suitable flight was found, they were allowed to return to their seats. The passengers reported feeling deeply humiliated, demeaned, and anxious from the moment they re-boarded the plane until they landed.
The lawsuit also mentioned that an announcement was made on the plane about a “delay due to body odor.”
Statement from American Airlines
American Airlines issued a statement regarding the allegations, saying, “We take these claims seriously and want our customers to have a positive experience. The allegations do not reflect our core values or our commitment to treating people with respect, and our teams are currently investigating the matter.”
