Authorities have reported that five people lost their lives when a small plane crashed shortly after takeoff from Santa Catalina Island off the coast of Southern California. According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the twin-engine Beechcraft 95 aircraft went down around 8:00 PM on Tuesday, just a few minutes after departing from Catalina Airport near Avalon Island.
The FAA’s initial statement indicated that there were five people on board the plane. However, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the five adults were found deceased in rugged terrain about one mile (1.6 kilometers) west of the airport.
The FAA noted that the accident occurred under “unknown conditions” during takeoff, prompting both the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) to launch a detailed investigation into the incident.
Catalina Airport, located approximately 25 miles from the Los Angeles coast, is known as the “Airport in the Sky” due to its precarious location at an elevation of 1,602 feet (488 meters). The airport has a single 3,000-foot runway. This incident has reignited safety concerns regarding small air transportation, and authorities are continuing to investigate the causes of the crash.
