Air Force Signs $13 Billion Contract with Sierra Nevada Corporation for ‘Doomsday’ Aircraft

The Air Force has inked a $13.08 billion contract with Sierra Nevada Corporation on April 26th for the Survivable Airborne Operations Center (SAOC), which is set to replace the E-4B.

Features and Significance of SAOC

SAOC serves as a nuclear-hardened aircraft enabling the government to conduct airborne operations during crisis situations, making it a vital asset.

Statements and Process

Sierra Nevada Corporation was selected as one of the two companies to bid for the SAOC. According to the Pentagon, work on the contract will continue until 2036.

Progress and Expenditures in the Process

The Air Force decided to accelerate efforts for the SAOC program, which commenced in 2019. While only $94 million was spent on the program in the fiscal year 2023, a budget request of $1.69 billion is anticipated for 2025.

Status and Developments of the E-4B Fleet

The E-4B fleet comprises four modified Boeing 747s grappling with diminishing production resources and increasing maintenance costs. To enhance fleet efficiency, the Air Force is investing in three-dimensional scanning of interior and exterior spaces for virtual reality training.
