Rolls-Royce aims to freeze the design of a smaller version of its UltraFan geared turbofan engine, developed for narrow-body passenger aircraft, by mid-year. Scheduled to begin ground testing in 2028, this engine could become a potential power source for the successors of the Airbus A320neo and Boeing 737.
Next-Gen Engine with 30,000+ lb Thrust
The new small UltraFan is based on the technologies developed in Rolls-Royce’s large UltraFan demonstrator, which delivers 80,000 lb of thrust. This version is specifically designed to compete in the single-aisle aircraft segment and will rival CFM’s Open Fan engine and the next-generation versions of Pratt & Whitney’s PW1100G GTF series.
“We want to show customers, suppliers, and potential partners that we’re serious about returning to this market,” said Alan Newby, Rolls-Royce’s Director of Aerospace Technology.
Return to Narrow-Body: Rolls-Royce’s Strategic Move
Rolls-Royce exited the narrow-body market in 2012 by selling its shares in International Aero Engines to Pratt & Whitney. The new strategy led by CEO Tufan Erginbilgiç signals a strong comeback in this segment.
The engine manufacturer aims to remain flexible depending on the market direction. “We don’t know whether the market will first choose wide-body or narrow-body, Airbus or Boeing. We need to be ready for every scenario,” Newby stated.
Clean Aviation and EU-Backed Projects
The small UltraFan design draws from Rolls-Royce’s Pearl 10X business jet engine and the HEAVEN (Hydrogen Engine Architecture Virtually Engineered Novelly) project, part of Europe’s Clean Aviation initiative. The project aims to develop architectures suitable for sustainable fuels and hydrogen, with a target of 20% fuel savings.
The second phase of HEAVEN involves designing small modular reactor (SMR) engines and increasing technology readiness levels.
£100 Billion Opportunity for the UK
Rolls-Royce estimates that narrow-body aircraft engines could contribute over £100 billion to the UK economy. Already employing 21,000 people in the UK, the company says this new initiative could create up to 40,000 skilled jobs.
The development cost of the small UltraFan is estimated at around $3.9 billion. Rolls-Royce is reportedly in discussions with the UK government for financial support. The company describes this engine family as a “once-in-a-generation” economic opportunity.
