According to the German news agency RND, Germany has set two major conditions for the sale of Eurofighter Typhoon jets to Turkey. Turkey has requested to purchase 40 Eurofighter Typhoon jets as part of its military modernization efforts. Although the request requires approval from the United Kingdom, Italy, and Spain, it is reported that Germany is blocking the deal.
Germany’s conditions include President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan halting his statements against Greece and Turkey renouncing its territorial claims over the Aegean islands. This comes at a time when relations between Turkey and Greece have been strained due to territorial disputes in the Aegean Sea, though both countries have recently shown signs of improving ties.
The Eurofighter Typhoon is produced by a consortium involving the UK, Italy, Spain, and Germany. Approval from all four nations is required for any jet sale. While the other consortium members have reportedly approved the deal, Germany’s veto could delay the agreement. Without Germany’s consent, the sale cannot proceed.
This deal is part of Turkey’s efforts to strengthen its air force by acquiring modern fighter jets like the Eurofighter Typhoon. The proposed agreement follows Turkey’s challenges in modernizing its fleet after being removed from the U.S. F-35 program due to its purchase of the Russian S-400 missile defense system.
