Following the US’s approval last January to sell up to 40 F-35 fighter jets to Greece at an estimated cost of $8.6 billion, the Greek government has approved the purchase of the first 20 F-35 fighter jets for $3.5 billion.
Defense Minister Dendias’s Statements
Defense Minister Nikos Dendias stated at a military airbase near Athens that this acquisition would create “strong deterrence in the region.” Dendias mentioned that the necessary letter of acceptance for the agreement has been signed and sent to the US.
The US is expected to begin delivering the first aircraft to Greece in 2028. Greece has the option to purchase an additional 20 F-35s under the estimated $8.6 billion agreement.
Comments from Government Spokesperson Marinakis
Government Spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis described this acquisition as “the most significant step in recent years” as part of Greece’s military modernization. Marinakis said, “We will continue to implement this major program to equip and strengthen our country’s defense.”
Bridget Lauderdale, Vice President of Lockheed Martin and General Manager of the F-35 program, noted that Greece is the 19th country to join the F-35 program and said, “It is an honor for us to continue our relationship.”

The current participants in the F-35 program, either as partners or through sales, include the US, the UK, Italy, the Netherlands, Canada, Australia, Denmark, Norway, Israel, Japan, South Korea, Belgium, Poland, Singapore, Finland, Switzerland, Germany, the Czech Republic, and Greece.
