The TEI-PD170 turbodiesel aviation engine, developed by TUSAŞ Engine Industries Inc. (TEI), offers better performance than its competitors in its class with its power and efficiency values. This engine stands out as Turkey’s first national turbodiesel aviation engine and powers many domestic UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles). The TEI-PD170 engine is used in important UAVs such as Anka, Aksungur, and Bayraktar TB3.
Superior Performance Features
The TEI-PD170 produces a maximum of 172 HP and can deliver 170 HP continuously up to an altitude of 20,000 feet. These features enable the engine to perform superiorly compared to its competitors. TEI General Manager Prof. Dr. Mahmut Faruk AKŞİT compares the data of the TEI-PD170 with its rivals, highlighting that this engine is by far the best in its class.
Technical Specifications of TEI-PD170:
- Cylinder Volume: 2.1 Liters
- Air Supply: Two-Stage Series Turbocharger
- Fuel Supply: Common Rail
- Takeoff Power: 172 HP
- Continuous Power (2300 propeller RPM): 172 HP
- Altitude Power (20,000 ft): 170 HP
- Altitude Power (30,000 ft): 130 HP
- Dry Weight: 162 kg
- Fuel: JP-8 or Jet-A1
- Fuel Consumption: 207 g/kWh
Fuel Efficiency and Power Comparison
The TEI-PD170 offers the best performance in its class based on the power produced at critical altitude. Despite its high power output, this engine is also the most fuel-efficient in its class. Compared to the imported Rotax 912 engine used in the Bayraktar TB2, it provides an 11% lower fuel consumption value, saving approximately 100 kg of fuel over a 20-hour flight. This saving offers the advantage of carrying more ammunition.
Altitude Performance and Records
The TEI-PD170 can produce 170 HP without power loss even at an altitude of 20,000 feet. On June 25, 2024, the Bayraktar TB3, equipped with the TEI-PD170 engine, reached an altitude of 36,310 feet, breaking the record for the highest altitude reached with a domestic engine in our national aviation history.
Next-Generation Engine: TEI-PD222ST
The TEI-PD222ST, developed by TEI, produces 225 HP while having the same dimensions as the TEI-PD170. With a maximum altitude value of 45,000 feet, this engine surpasses its competitors with high power, low fuel consumption, and compact design. Offering a longer usage life with 3,600 hours of operation, the TEI-PD222 provides a significant advantage for large-sized UAVs by producing over 190 HP at 20,000 ft altitude.
Technical Specifications of TEI-PD222ST:
- Cylinder Volume: 2.1 Liters
- Air Supply: Single-Stage Turbocharger
- Fuel Supply: Common Rail
- Takeoff Power: 225 HP (5 minutes)
- Continuous Power: 200 HP
- Altitude Power (20,000 ft): >190 HP
- Altitude Power (30,000 ft): 115 HP
- Dry Weight: 163 kg
- Fuel: JP-8 or Jet-A1
- Fuel Consumption: 220 g/kWh
The TEI-PD170 and TEI-PD222ST engines developed by TEI are among the most important indicators of Turkey’s domestic and national advancements in aviation. These engines enhance the performance of domestic UAVs, strengthening Turkey’s independence in the defense and aviation sectors.
