Hotel Belmar Opens a Regenerative Villa Collection in Costa Rica

Hotel Belmar is raising the bar on regenerative hospitality in Costa Rica with the debut of Artista, a collection of 10 private villas set within Monteverde’s cloud forest. Newly opened on June 1, 2026, the car-free enclave is adjacent to the main Belmar property and is the hotel’s most ambitious sustainability initiative to date.

“Artista represents a natural progression in our journey. It reflects how our understanding of this land has deepened over time. We approached each villa as an artist approaches a work—carefully composing space, material and light in dialogue with the forest. Hospitality, for us, is an act of creation grounded in responsibility to the land that sustains it,” said Pedro Belmar, one of the owners of Hotel Belmar, in a press statement.

Hotel Belmar Ups the Green Ante

The project is pursuing CORE Green Building Certification by the International Living Future Institute—one of the most rigorous green building standards globally—with recognition including energy efficiency, environmental impact and regenerative design.

Water and energy efficiency targets are equally ambitious. Rainwater harvesting and a BioNest biological treatment system are projected to reduce water use by at least 50 percent compared to conventional hospitality models, with a long-term goal of net-zero or water-positive performance. Passive airflow strategies, solar-filtered glazing, on-site solar generation and high-efficiency heat pumps are expected to reduce energy consumption by at least 70 percent versus baseline projects.

Design is inspired by alpine, Nordic and mid-century mountain architecture, interpreted through Costa Rican craftsmanship. Belmar collaborated with local artisans, cabinetmakers and craftspeople throughout construction and integrated textiles from CASEM, a women’s cooperative, alongside work by illustrators, painters and photographers from Monteverde and across Costa Rica. The land was formerly used for cattle grazing; a long-term restoration effort now focuses on reintroducing native species and strengthening biodiversity.

The collection includes 7 1-bedroom villas averaging 1,295 sq. ft., each accommodating up to 4 guests, and 3 2-bedroom villas averaging 2,155 sq. ft., each accommodating up to 6 guests. All villas feature double rain showers, a central living area and a private terrace with a saltwater plunge pool, with independent bedrooms connected through glass-enclosed passageways. One-bedroom villas include a dedicated Studio; 2-bedroom villas offer a chef-service kitchen. Interiors are intentionally television-free, with low, warm lighting and natural soundscapes that support rest, guided by principles from functional medicine and nervous system health.

Of note: Hotel Belmar is the first Costa Rican member of Design Hotels.
