The International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced that the number of airline CEOs committed to the IATA Safety Leadership Charter has reached 73.
By reinforcing the already strong safety culture in aviation, the year 2023 has seen the best results ever, with no fatalities among IATA member airlines or airlines on the IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) registry.
IATA Director General Willie Walsh emphasized the relationship between strong leadership and a robust safety culture, stating, “Both are needed to ensure continuous improvements in safety performance. The 73 airline CEOs who have signed the IATA Safety Leadership Charter have set an example for both their airlines and the industry.”
Objectives of the IATA Safety Leadership Charter
The IATA Safety Leadership Charter was developed in consultation with IATA members and the broader aviation community. The charter aims to support industry leaders in fostering a positive safety culture within their organizations around eight leadership principles.
Examples of these principles include:
- Reinforcing safety through both words and actions.
- Promoting safety awareness among employees, the leadership team, and the board of directors.
- Guiding the integration of safety into business strategies, processes, and performance metrics.
- Proactively managing safety and building internal capacity to collectively achieve corporate safety goals.
- Creating a safe environment where all employees feel responsible for safety and are encouraged to report safety-related information.
- Establishing and communicating clear expectations regarding acceptable and unacceptable behaviors.
- Fostering a workplace where all employees feel accountable for safety.
- Regularly assessing and improving the corporate safety culture.
