U.S.-based defense and aerospace company Lockheed Martin announced that negotiations with Turkey have reached the final stage for the acquisition of 40 F-16 Block 70 fighter jets and 79 modernization kits from the United States. This agreement is a significant step that will enhance Turkey’s air defense capabilities and contribute to the security balance in the region.
The Turkish Ministry of Defense has sent a new letter to the U.S., proposing not only the purchase but also the production of F-16 fighter jets in Turkey. If accepted, this could potentially reduce the overall cost of the deal.
OJ Sanchez, Vice President and General Manager of Lockheed Martin’s Integrated Fighter Group, expressed excitement about the discussions with Turkey, welcoming the opportunity to work again with Turkey on the Block 70 series.
Sanchez also highlighted the features of the new F-16s. These aircraft are equipped with the Northrop Grumman-manufactured SABR APG-83 radar, which closely resembles the radar used in the F-35. Additionally, the aircraft boasts advanced electronic systems and digital displays, and has the capability to carry conformal fuel tanks, providing it with a longer range. Technically, the F-16 Block 70s are expected to remain operational until 2060.
Lockheed Martin stated that they are ready to review their production capacity to meet Turkey’s demands. They expressed their enthusiasm about Turkey’s request for the F-16s and indicated that necessary steps will be taken to ensure prompt delivery.
With this agreement, Turkey is expected to strengthen its air force capabilities and secure a significant position among NATO allies. After detailed technical and commercial negotiations, the official announcement of the agreement and the delivery schedule of the aircraft will be determined.
