Turkey’s first jet-powered supersonic trainer aircraft, HÜRJET, left its facilities for the first time to participate in the 19 May Youth and Sports Day celebrations after conducting test flights at Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAŞ) facilities.
A significant milestone has been achieved in the HÜRJET project, which was originally designed and developed by TUSAŞ under the coordination of the Presidency of Defense Industries.
First Demonstration Flight
Designed at TUSAŞ’s Kahramankazan facilities and having completed its maiden flight, HÜRJET will perform a special demonstration flight in Samsun as part of the 19 May Youth and Sports Day celebrations. This flight marks the first time HÜRJET will leave its home base to fly in a different region.
Development and Testing Process
HÜRJET is designed to have multiple versions, including jet training, combat readiness, red air, and aircraft carrier variants, as well as an aerobatic demonstration version. To date, HÜRJET has completed 56 sorties and accumulated 65 flight hours, successfully passing various aircraft systems’ development and verification tests. Envelope expansion tests have enhanced the aircraft’s capabilities, enabling it to achieve higher speeds and altitudes while performing more aggressive maneuvers in the sky.
Future Plans with Turkish Stars
HÜRJET is planned to eventually replace the NF-5 aircraft used by the Turkish Air Force’s aerobatic team, Turkish Stars. The aircraft has already conducted formation flights with the Turkish Stars.
Joining the Turkish Air Force in 2025
The HÜRJET Jet Training and Light Attack Aircraft Project, developed with domestic resources, began in August 2017. The first component was moved to the final assembly line on June 10, 2022. Following ground tests, HÜRJET started its engine for the first time on January 30, 2023. Taxi tests commenced on March 18, 2023, and the maiden flight took place on April 25, 2023.
During its first flight, HÜRJET remained airborne for 26 minutes, reached an altitude of 14,000 feet, and achieved an airspeed of 250 knots. After the initial flight, HÜRJET continued with further flight tests. According to TUSAŞ’s mass production plans, the first year will see the production of 6-7 aircraft, with a delivery rate of 2 aircraft per month starting in 2025. Deliveries to the Turkish Air Force are expected to begin in 2025.
