A total of 59 activists detained from the Global Sumud Flotilla, which was intercepted by Israel off the coast of Crete, were brought to Istanbul on a special Turkish Airlines (THY) flight. Activists detained following Israel’s intervention in international waters against the Global Sumud Flotilla, which had set sail in the Mediterranean to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza by breaking the blockade via sea, were brought to Türkiye. The special Turkish Airlines flight departing from Crete carried a total of 59 activists, including 18 Turkish nationals, to Istanbul Airport.
The aircraft, operating with flight number “TK 6934,” landed in Istanbul at 21:45, where passengers were welcomed at the airport’s VIP Terminal by their families, officials, and representatives of civil society organizations. The activists arriving in Türkiye were later referred to the Forensic Medicine Institute for medical examinations. After the completion of the checks, the group left the institution.
According to sources from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, two Turkish citizens who were unable to board the same flight due to medical examinations are expected to return to Türkiye the following day.
Activists from 16 countries were on the same flight
The group brought to Istanbul did not consist solely of Turkish citizens. The aircraft also carried nationals from the United States, Argentina, Australia, Bahrain, Brazil, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Malaysia, Mexico, Pakistan, Chile, and New Zealand.
According to information shared by the flotilla organizers, the 2026 Spring Mission of the Global Sumud Flotilla began on April 12 in Barcelona, Spain. After new participants joined in Sicily, the flotilla set off again on April 26 and encountered intervention by Israeli forces in international waters off the coast of Crete on the night of April 29.

It is reported that the operation against the flotilla took place approximately 600 nautical miles from Gaza, in international waters close to Greek territorial waters. According to statements from activists, the vessels were intercepted, some participants were detained, and at least one ship was damaged.
The incident has sparked new debates on humanitarian aid corridors, international maritime law, navigation safety, and the protection of civilian initiatives. The operation targeting an organization involving hundreds of participants from different countries is also being closely monitored for its diplomatic implications.
Political and civil reception at Istanbul Airport
Those present at the reception at Istanbul Airport included Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Hacı Ali Özel, Chairman of the Türkiye–Palestine Interparliamentary Friendship Group Hasan Turan, Istanbul Airport Civil Administration Chief İlker Haktankaçmaz, and representatives of various civil society organizations.
During the reception, Palestinian keffiyehs and flowers were used, and statements emphasized that humanitarian aid initiatives for Gaza would continue.
Movement within the flotilla continues: new ships waiting at sea
According to information provided by flotilla officials, the organization includes 345 participants from 39 countries. While the group that arrived in Istanbul was among the first evacuated contingents following the operation, it was stated that other ships continuing their course at sea remain.
Organization representatives noted that there are Turkish citizens among those on other vessels waiting off the coast of Crete and that the flotilla will continue to grow with new participants.

Developments surrounding the Sumud Flotilla may evolve into a new turning point in terms of security, diplomacy, and international public opinion in the Eastern Mediterranean, beyond efforts to deliver aid to Gaza.
