No matter how “cool” or “antique” a weapon may be, it poses a threat to airport security. This was exemplified when a woman attempted to board a plane with a “samurai sword” at New York’s LaGuardia Airport.
According to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the unnamed woman tried to place a 15-inch blade in her handbag on Tuesday morning. While leaving her bags at the security checkpoint for screening, TSA personnel detected the blade during an X-ray scan. Upon opening the bag, a “decorative, black-handled” sword was found.
TSA spokesperson Lisa Farbstein shared a photo of the sword on social media, stating, “Sorry folks, but your samurai swords are not allowed through TSA checkpoints.” It is currently unknown whether the sword is real or a replica.
The sword was confiscated by security officials and was retained as evidence. The woman was informed that she could face legal consequences for attempting to board a plane with a prohibited item. The court hearing is expected to take place later this year.
