Turkish Airlines 2024 Traffic Data Announced: Passenger Numbers Drop by 3.4% in September 2024, Reaching 7.7 Million Passengers.

Turkish Airlines (THY) has released the traffic results for September 2024 and the January-September period. While there was a slight decline in passenger numbers, there was a strong increase in cargo transportation.

Here are the details:

Passenger Traffic Data: September 2024
In September 2023, the total number of passengers was 7.9 million, which decreased by 3.4% to 7.7 million in the same period of 2024. Despite this decline, the number of international-to-international transfer passengers increased by 3.1%, reaching 2.74 million. The passenger load factor decreased by 1.1 points to 83.8%. The domestic load factor stood out at 88.8%, while the international load factor was 83.3%.

Increase in Available Seat Kilometers (ASK)
In September 2024, THY recorded a 5.7% increase in available seat kilometers (ASK), reaching a total of 22.3 billion kilometers. While this increase reflects the company’s continued capacity expansion, the decrease in passenger numbers indicates a slight drop in capacity utilization.

Cargo Transportation: Major Growth
In September 2024, cargo and mail transportation increased by 11.9%, with 168,100 tons of cargo carried. In the January-September 2024 period, the amount of cargo transported rose by 26.5%, reaching 1.5 million tons. This growth in the cargo sector shows that THY continues to strengthen its global competitiveness in this field.

January-September 2024 Performance
THY carried 65.1 million passengers in the January-September 2024 period, representing a 1.8% increase compared to the same period last year. The 6.7% increase in international-to-international transfer passengers also highlights the company’s strong performance in international passenger transportation. However, there was a 0.8-point decrease in the overall load factor, which was recorded at 82.3%.

Fleet and Flight Destinations
As of the end of September 2024, the number of aircraft in THY’s fleet increased to 467, representing an 8.9% rise compared to the previous year. The company’s flight network expanded to 342 destinations, further enhancing its global reach.

Future Outlook
THY continues to build on its success in cargo transportation, showing significant growth in the first nine months of 2024. However, fluctuations in passenger traffic in certain markets have been noted. THY aims to overcome these challenges through capacity increases and strategic initiatives in the coming period. The growth in international flights and strong performance in cargo will continue to support the company’s long-term sustainable growth journey.
