After Greece withdrew from a NATO exercise due to its claim of a 10-mile airspace, Turkey has once again accelerated its military activities in the Aegean. The Turkish Air Force and Navy have closed certain areas in the region with NOTAMs (Notices to Airmen) and NAVTEXs (Navigational Warnings) for planned exercises. Announcements stated that “Non-Firing Naval Air Exercises” would take place on October 10, followed by “Firing Exercises” on October 12.
In response to Turkey’s notifications, Greece asserted that these exercise areas fall within the Athens FIR (Flight Information Region). The Greek government claimed that it holds the exclusive authority to conduct aviation operations in these areas and argued that Turkey’s notifications were incorrect, misleading, and without legal basis. Therefore, the Greek government declared Turkey’s announcements invalid and void.
The ongoing exchange of notifications between the two countries has deepened with references to certain decisions by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Greek officials stated that they issued counter-notifications to clarify misunderstandings regarding airspace boundaries.
