Spain Cancels F-35 Purchase, KAAN Emerges as an Alternative

Spain has cancelled its F-35 purchase. Eyes turn to Türkiye’s national fighter jet KAAN. The twin-engine, advanced technology KAAN could launch a new era in European defence.

Spain Cancels F-35 Purchase, Eyes Turn to Türkiye’s National Fighter Jet KAAN

Spain’s withdrawal from the F-35 programme opens a new chapter in Europe’s defence balance. Türkiye’s national fighter jet KAAN stands out with its twin-engine structure, advanced technology, and indigenous design.

Spain has unexpectedly abandoned its long-discussed plan to purchase F-35s. The Madrid government’s decision was influenced not only by cost but also by a strategy to reduce dependence on American technology. Under its new €10 billion defence plan, Spain aims to allocate the majority of its budget to European-made platforms.

KAAN: Türkiye’s 5th Generation Fighter

Developed by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAŞ), KAAN draws attention with its twin-engine design, advanced stealth technologies, and fully indigenous avionics. Seen as a strong alternative to the F-35, KAAN also challenges Europe’s existing defence programmes.

Spanish defence experts note that KAAN has the capacity to be used not only for the air force but also in future aircraft carrier projects.

Technological Independence and Strategic Advantage

KAAN stands out with its sensor fusion, ASELSAN-produced IR radars, advanced electronic warfare systems, and integrated combat capacity with unmanned aerial vehicles. Indigenous engine projects also aim to ensure Türkiye’s long-term independence in engine technology.

A New Influence in European Defence

Spanish media reports suggest KAAN could provide strategic flexibility within Europe’s defence architecture. If a naval version is developed, KAAN would become the first non-Western 5th generation fighter jet capable of operating from Spain’s aircraft carriers. This represents an option that reduces political risks and enhances opportunities for joint production.

Türkiye–Spain Cooperation

Defence cooperation between the two countries began with the HÜRJET training aircraft. According to experts, Spain’s potential turn towards KAAN could mark not just an aircraft procurement but a historic turning point for Europe’s defence strategy.

KAAN’s Role in the 2030s

Türkiye envisions KAAN replacing its F-16 fleet in the 2030s. With its multi-role, stealth, and advanced technology-based structure, KAAN is preparing to assume a key role in the defence vision of both Türkiye and Europe.
