U.S. President Donald Trump addressed the recent nuclear tension between India and Pakistan during a working lunch with Republican senators at the White House. Trump stated that the escalating conflict between the two nations had come to an end due to U.S. diplomatic intervention.
“These countries were very serious. India and Pakistan were facing off. Aircraft were shot down in the air. I believe five planes were downed,” said Trump, pointing out that both sides possessing nuclear weapons made the situation extremely dangerous.
While not going into detail, President Trump reiterated that the U.S. played an active role in securing the ceasefire declared on May 10.
Background:
In response to a terrorist attack in the Pahalgam region of Jammu and Kashmir on April 22, which killed 26 people, India launched missile strikes on May 6 targeting Pakistani territory and the Pakistan-controlled Azad Kashmir region. These developments escalated military tensions between the two nuclear powers.
Following U.S. mediation efforts, both sides declared a ceasefire on May 10 and agreed to de-escalate tensions.
