According to ACI EUROPE data, Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen International Airport became Europe’s fastest-growing major airport in the first quarter of 2026, recording a growth rate of 12.4 percent.
The March 2026 and first-quarter air traffic report published by Airports Council International Europe revealed that the balance of power in European aviation is being reshaped. According to the report, while passenger traffic across Europe grew by 3.8 percent compared to the same period last year, Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen International Airport became one of the continent’s most remarkable hubs with its strong growth performance.
With a 12.4 percent increase in passenger traffic during the first quarter of the year, Sabiha Gökçen rose to become Europe’s fastest-growing large-scale airport. As a result, Istanbul’s air transport hub on the Asian side became one of the symbols of next-generation aviation growth not only in Türkiye but across Europe as well.
Double-Digit Growth Continued in March
Having achieved strong passenger growth since the beginning of 2026, ISG maintained its upward momentum in March as well. Its performance, particularly within the category of Europe’s major airports, became one of the success stories closely followed by the aviation industry.
At a time when global geopolitical tensions and Middle East-centred crises are putting pressure on air transportation, Sabiha Gökçen’s ability to sustain growth is considered significant for the sector. While Istanbul Airport recorded a growth rate of 7.7 percent, Sabiha Gökçen followed closely with 7.2 percent. Istanbul’s two major hubs achieved growth rates surpassing major European airports such as:

- Barcelona–El Prat Airport
- Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport
