Minister of National Defense Yaşar Güler made significant statements regarding Turkey’s procurement of Eurofighter combat aircraft. Speaking on CNN Türk, Güler stated that Turkey has long wanted to acquire the Eurofighter combat aircraft and used the following words:
“As Turkey, we have wanted to acquire such an aircraft from the beginning.” Eurofighter is not only a system belonging to our German friends, but it is a consortium. The United Kingdom and Spain are also part of this consortium. Our German friends have some concerns, but as a member of an organization like NATO, it is not possible for Turkey to accept these concerns. We regularly share our views with our friends. Personally, I believe that this situation will be resolved in a short time. The provision of Eurofighters to Saudi Arabia could be the beginning of this process.”
Minister Güler announced that Turkey initially plans to purchase 20 Eurofighters and then 20 more. He stated that the United Kingdom and Spain view this demand positively, while mentioning that one country opposes this request. Turkey finds imposing sanctions among allies contrary to the spirit of alliance.
