Recently filed schedule changes reported by Aero Routes suggest that Lufthansa will be cutting its schedule in half this winter on the transatlantic route from its hub at Frankfurt Airport (FRA) to John F Kennedy International (JFK) in New York City. Having initially been set to operate two rotations a day on this route during the winter months, the German flag carrier has now opted to only serve the route daily.
While we are now in some of the busiest weeks of the peak summer season for commercial aviation, the airline industry is one that operates in the longer term, and we often see such changes being made with this amount of notice. While Lufthansa’s cuts on the FRAJFK route are significant on a proportional level, both it and fellow Star Alliance member United will also serve nearby Newark this winter.
According to scheduling data made available by Cirium, an aviation analytics company, Lufthansa had initially planned to operate a daily rotation between Frankfurt and JFK with both the Airbus A350-900 and the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner this winter. Now, however, only the A350 rotation will operate, with just one return flight a day having been penciled in between October 25, 2026 and March 27, 2027.
While the exact reasoning for the cuts remains unclear, it is undeniable that Lufthansa does face significant competition on this route. Indeed, using November as an example, its daily A350 flight from Frankfurt to JFK will also be joined by one operated by Singapore Airlines’ Boeing 777-300ERs. There are also less frequent flights from Delta (three times a week) and Condor (four to five times a week).

Lufthansa’s Airbus A350s Also Fly From Munich To JFK
It is important to note, at this juncture, that Lufthansa’s coverage at New York JFK Airport will not be limited to its daily flights with the Airbus A350-900 from Frankfurt Airport this winter. Indeed, the German flag carrier and Star Alliance founding member also plans to fly these modern Airbus widebody twinjets from Munich Franz Josef Strauß Airport (FRA) on a daily basis throughout the winter months.
According to present fleet data made available by ch-aviation, Lufthansa currently has a grand total of 31 units of the Airbus A350-900 at its disposal, with these jets clicking in at an average age of just 6.2 years old (compared to a fleet-wide mean of 14.2 years old). Going forward, it is also set to take delivery of another 14 examples of the Airbus A350-900, alongside 15 units of the stretched A350-1000.
Reflecting their use on a diverse range of long-haul routes, aeroLOPA notes that Lufthansa has three different seating layouts for its A350s. This winter’s flights from Frankfurt Airport to New York JFK all use a three-class layout with 293 seats, but there is more variety on the route from Munich. On this corridor, the 267-seat four-class ‘Allegris’ layout dominates, with only certain flights using the 293-seater.

Elsewhere In The New York Area, Lufthansa Also Flies To Newark
Elsewhere in the wider New York City area, Lufthansa does also fly to nearby Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) in the neighboring US state of New Jersey from Frankfurt Airport. This winter, Cirium’s scheduling data shows that it plans to do so on a daily basis using the Boeing 747-8, as seen above. Of course, flying into Newark is more advantageous for those with connecting itineraries.
Indeed, as Newark is a hub for Lufthansa’s fellow Star Alliance member United Airlines, passengers flying from Frankfurt through Newark can avail themselves of the ability to book seamless single-ticket transit journeys. United Airlines itself also flies from Frankfurt to Newark: this winter, it is currently set to serve the route on a daily basis using the Boeing 777-300ER. These jets have 350 seats in three classes.
