With the test conducted off the coast of Sinop on 30 November 2025, Türkiye not only achieved an engineering milestone but also opened a new chapter in the combat doctrine of the future. KIZILELMA, developed by Baykar, made history by striking a jet-powered airborne target with pinpoint accuracy using a national radar and a national air-to-air missile.
The weight of this sentence is immense: For the first time in the world, an unmanned fighter aircraft conducted a missile-guided air-to-air attack using its own radar and succeeded.
This development marks a new phase in Türkiye’s journey in the defence industry. Until now, the role of unmanned aerial vehicles was mostly limited to reconnaissance, surveillance, and precision strikes against ground targets. But KIZILELMA has shown that these boundaries no longer apply.
Türkiye has entered the history books as one of the first countries to break the monopoly of manned aircraft in air combat.
A New Class in the Sky: Autonomous Air Hunters
The test performed by KIZILELMA is not just a technical achievement; it is a sign of a paradigm shift in military aviation. Conducting air-to-air combat requires high manoeuvrability, advanced radar, target tracking, rapid reaction time, and a reliable missile-seeker harmony.
The fact that all these requirements were met by an unmanned, autonomous, AI-supported platform fundamentally transforms the future battlefield.
In this process, ASELSAN’s MURAD AESA radar, TÜBİTAK SAGE’s GÖKDOĞAN air-to-air missile, and Baykar’s flight-control software worked in perfect harmony. In other words, KIZILELMA is not just an aircraft; it is a complete national air-to-air attack ecosystem — from radar to munitions, from artificial intelligence to aerodynamics.
This is why the international media’s interest was significant. KIZILELMA’s successful test was announced by many media outlets as a “milestone in aviation history.” It was emphasised that Türkiye had not only developed a product but also a concept.
A New Page in Türkiye’s Defence Industry Journey
We can better understand the meaning of this test for Türkiye under several headings:
1) Türkiye is now among the leading countries in unmanned fighter aircraft
Today, apart from the US, China, and Russia, very few countries are developing platforms with unmanned air-to-air capability. Türkiye’s presence in this league means that it will increase its influence in the battlespace of the future.
2) An economic potential worth billions of dollars
For many countries with limited access to conventional fighter jets, KIZILELMA represents a serious alternative.
Lower cost, lower operating expenses, and political independence…
This trio indicates that Türkiye will gain significant export capacity in the coming years.
3) A force multiplier in air power
The introduction of KIZILELMA will reduce the burden on manned fighter jets.
Being able to carry out high-risk missions unmanned is crucial for both pilot safety and operational costs.
In missions such as deep strike, suppression of enemy air defence, and destruction of strategic targets, KIZILELMA will create a force-multiplying effect.
4) It expands Türkiye’s technology ecosystem
AESA radar, jet-engine technology, AI flight computers, guided munitions, composite materials, electronic warfare…

KIZILELMA’s Roadmap: A, B, C and Heavy-Class Variants
The version of KIZILELMA we see today is actually the first member of a large family.
In the coming years, KIZILELMA-B, capable of supersonic speeds; KIZILELMA-C, with twin engines and higher performance; and heavier, long-range variants will come to the fore.
This evolution will not only support Türkiye’s air power but will also pave the way for unmanned systems to completely replace manned aircraft in certain missions.

As with every new technology, KIZILELMA also has critical needs and risks:
- Engine dependency and the need to develop an indigenous turbofan
