A nationwide air transport strike scheduled in Italy on February 16 is expected to affect between 25,000 and 27,000 passengers. The strike will involve ITA Airways employees, as well as pilots, cabin crew, and ground handling staff.
24-Hour Work Stoppage on February 16
ITA Airways employees will carry out a 24-hour work stoppage starting at midnight on Monday, February 16. The strike is expected to particularly impact passengers traveling to Italy for ski holidays and those traveling for the Winter Olympics.
Flight cancellations and delays are anticipated at multiple airports, including Milan Malpensa, Milan Linate, Rome Fiumicino, Venice Marco Polo, and Verona Valerio Catullo.
According to Cirium data, ITA Airways has 314 flights scheduled for February 16. Approximately 70% of these flights are planned outside the legally guaranteed time slots.
Which Flights Are Guaranteed?
Under Italian aviation regulations, flights are required to operate during certain time intervals. Accordingly:
- 07:00 – 10:00
- 18:00 – 21:00
Flights scheduled during these hours will largely be maintained. However, flights outside these time windows are at risk of cancellation.
Vueling and Ground Handling Staff Also Join Strike
Flight attendants of Vueling Airlines are also expected to strike for the full day on February 16.
Additionally, ground handling staff affiliated with Airport Handling and ALHA at Milan Linate and Milan Malpensa airports will participate in the work stoppage.
