Airbus is testing airline demand for the 180-seat A220-500 model. The new A220 variant could serve as an alternative to the A320neo on short- and medium-haul routes.
As part of its goal to expand its single-aisle aircraft portfolio, Airbus has accelerated preparations for the A220-500 model with an approximate capacity of 180 seats. Although the aircraft manufacturer has not yet made an official launch decision, it has initiated a targeted sales process to gauge interest from airlines, primarily existing A220 operators.
What Will the A220-500 Offer?
The A220-500 is planned to be positioned above the current A220-100 and A220-300 models, which have seating capacities of 110–160 seats. Airbus is expected to develop this variant by stretching the fuselage of the A220-300. This approach aims to keep both development costs and certification timelines limited.
Due to the increased weight, a slight reduction in range is anticipated, while the A220-500 is planned to be optimised for short- and medium-haul flights of up to four hours. This makes the aircraft particularly attractive for high-density regional and intra-continental routes.
Competition with the A320neo or a Complement?
At first glance, the 180-seat A220-500 may appear to overlap with Airbus’s own A320neo family. However, according to experts, the main differences lie in operating economics, fuel efficiency, and passenger experience.
The A220 platform stands out with its low fuel consumption on short-haul flights, 2-3 seating configuration, and cabin featuring wider windows. If Airbus positions the A220-500 at a competitive price, the model is expected to become a strong alternative for airlines that do not require all the performance capabilities of the A320neo.

Industry observers predict that, if commercial discussions progress as planned, an official announcement could be made in conjunction with a major aviation airshow, potentially in 2026.
