Turkey’s first domestically produced turbofan jet trainer, HÜRJET, is set to achieve a historic milestone on the international stage. Spain will purchase 45 HÜRJET aircraft from Turkey to modernize its air force fleet.
Under the decision approved by the Spanish Council of Ministers, €1.04 billion (USD 1.2 billion) in financing has been allocated to Airbus Defence and Space. This move forms a significant part of a broad defense modernization program worth €3.6 billion, covering 168 new aircraft and helicopters by 2030.
F-5M Fleet to Be Replaced by HÜRJET
HÜRJET will replace the current F-5M advanced training fleet of the Spanish Air and Space Forces under the “Integrated Training System Program (ITS-C).” The aircraft will be customized to meet Spain’s requirements with contributions from Spanish aerospace and defense companies.
Deliveries to Begin in 2028
The first aircraft will be manufactured at TUSAŞ facilities in Turkey.
Subsequently, the aircraft will be converted at Airbus Defence and Space facilities in Spain with local equipment integration and updated training systems.
Deliveries are expected to begin in 2028, with the first batch ready for the 2029/2030 training cycle.
The Spanish-configured HÜRJETs are planned to enter service starting in 2031.
