In the German city of Mannheim, a light aircraft carrying three people made an emergency landing on a road in the middle of a residential area due to a technical malfunction. The aircraft came to a stop after striking a road sign while passing between parked vehicles, and three people were slightly injured in the incident.
The aircraft incident that occurred in the German city of Mannheim caused major panic across the city. The Diamond DA 40 D Star light aircraft, which took off from Mannheim-Neuostheim Airport, gave a technical malfunction warning shortly after departure.
The incident took place in the Neckarau district of Mannheim in the afternoon. Following the malfunction, the pilot decided to make an emergency landing in an open area near the Hauptfeuerwache (Main Fire Station), located between residential buildings.
Passed Between Parked Vehicles
According to eyewitnesses, the aircraft, which lost control, narrowly passed between two parked vehicles during its landing attempt and ended up on Neckarauer Straße. Unable to slow down, the aircraft skidded for a while before coming to a stop on the road after crashing into a large road sign.
Three Passengers Slightly Injured
All three people on board the aircraft sustained minor injuries. Numerous police, fire brigade and medical teams were dispatched to the scene. The injured were treated on site by medical personnel.
In a statement, the Mannheim Fire Brigade emphasised that it was a great stroke of luck that the aircraft did not hit buildings or the heavy traffic on the main road.
Road Closed to Traffic, Investigation Launched
Due to the accident, the city-centre-bound direction of Neckarauer Straße was completely closed to traffic. After hours of work, the aircraft wreckage was safely removed from the area.
While the exact cause of the accident has not yet been determined, teams from the Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation (BFU) have launched a detailed investigation at the scene. The investigation is expected to reveal the source of the technical malfunction that forced the pilot to make the emergency landing.
