A male cabin crew member working on a British Airways flight operating from San Francisco to London was arrested at Heathrow Airport after landing on suspicion of illegal substance use and unusual behaviour displayed during the flight.
The incident, which occurred aboard a British Airways Airbus A380 aircraft flying from San Francisco in the United States to London, the capital of the United Kingdom, attracted widespread attention across the international aviation and travel sectors. Carrying approximately 470 passengers and crew, the aircraft was taken under control by police immediately after landing at London Heathrow Airport on 21 December.
According to information obtained, during the transatlantic flight lasting more than 10 hours, a male cabin crew member was observed displaying inconsistent and unusual behaviour. When it was noticed during meal service that a member of staff was missing, a search was carried out, during which the cabin crew member in question was found completely naked in a business class toilet.
As the situation posed a risk to flight safety, the cabin manager intervened, and the process was handled discreetly to prevent panic among passengers. It was learned that the cabin crew member was dressed in first class pyjamas available on the aircraft and seated in a separate seat in the premium cabin, where he was kept under supervision until landing.
Due to one crew member being taken out of service, the remaining team had to share the increased workload. It was stated that some crew members were unable to use their scheduled rest periods; nevertheless, flight services were reportedly maintained in a professional manner.
The aircraft landed at Heathrow Airport at around 11.00 on 21 December. Police officers boarded the aircraft and detained the cabin crew member. Medical teams were also present during the operation, and the individual was taken off the aircraft in a wheelchair.
Sources close to the flight crew claimed that the cabin crew member showed signs indicative of stimulant substance use. However, British police did not issue an official statement regarding the incident, stating only that the investigation was continuing under standard procedures.
British Airways, in a statement, confirmed that the staff member concerned had been suspended from duty and said that the airline was cooperating fully with the relevant authorities. The airline emphasised that the incident would be handled as part of a legal process rather than as an internal disciplinary matter.
While the San Francisco–London route is known as one of the world’s busiest and most prestigious intercontinental routes, this incident has once again brought to the fore discussions within the aviation sector about the need for closer monitoring of the health and psychological condition of flight crews.
Authorities stated that the investigation is ongoing and that the incident could set a precedent, particularly in terms of strengthening safety protocols on long-haul flights.
