Iberia flight IB579, operated by Spain’s national flag carrier, departed this afternoon from Madrid-Barajas Airport en route to Paris Orly. However, shortly after takeoff, the aircraft experienced a severe bird strike.
The Airbus A321-253NY (A321neo) aircraft suffered significant damage to its radome—the nose section of the aircraft—due to the impact. The flight crew immediately decided to return, landing the aircraft safely back in Madrid.
Radome Shattered, Engine Fan Blades Also Damaged
Photos taken at the airport show that the aircraft’s radome was crushed, with some parts broken off. Eyewitnesses reported that remains of the bird were also visible inside one of the engine’s fan blades.
According to FlightRadar24 data, the aircraft circled around the Madrid area to descend before landing. The flight, which lasted about an hour, ended in a safe landing.
Aircraft Withdrawn from Service, Passengers Rebooked
Following the damage, the flight was cancelled and a detailed technical inspection was launched by maintenance teams. Passengers were rebooked on later Iberia flights.
