Star Alliance carrier United Airlines has celebrated the delivery of its two newest Airbus A321neo airplanes, as the 69th and 70th of the type will enter its fleet. Both of these planes were ferried from Airbus’ United States assembly line at Mobile International Airport (BFM) on July 1 and July 2.
Both the airplanes, which entered induction this week, will soon be whisking United passengers across the airline’s network. These deliveries are all part of the airline’s expansive blueprint as it looks to cement its position as a leading premium US airline. These deliveries are central to its plan to accept around 200 of the type, with another 135 still to go.
United Airlines Welcomes N24573 And N54561 To Its Fleet
The two new aircraft, which carry registration N24573 and N54561, were both ferried to Tampa International Airport (TPA) earlier this week, where the airplanes will undergo specialized maintenance checks, interior installations and other regulatory inspections at their own maintenance hangar at the airport before they enter scheduled service. United hosts a $33 million facility at the Florida airport.
N24573 was moved from Mobile to Tampa on July 1. N54561 followed on July 2, completing a one-hour and 42-minute flight, while N24573 was subsequently transferred to Melbourne (MLB).
Simple Flying reached out to United for comment on when it expect the airline to enter regular service; however, an airline spokesperson could not immediately be reached.
Part Of A Plan To Welcome More Than 250 New Aircraft
These latest arrivals are part of the United Next program, where the Chicago-based airline plans to accept delivery of more than 250 aircraft up until April 2028, with more modern aircraft and new variants set to make their way to what is the largest airline in the United by the number of aircraft operated and destinations served (more than 400).
For the A321neo, up to 50 of these planes will be the new Coastliner Airbus A321neo, which will feature the latest all-aisle access for lie-flat United Polaris seating. This concept is to provide passengers with the same feeling of spaciousness that is expected on widebody flights. The new suites will be wider at the shoulder and elbow when compared to their closest competitor products.
Once operational, these planes will connect United’s West Coast hubs of San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to the East Coast destinations such as Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) daily.
The carrier took delivery of three A321neos in less than a week, including two on the same day and another just before Christmas.
The Coastliner A321neo will see a total of 20 all-aisle access United Polaris seats, paired with 12 United Premium Plus and 129 economy class seats. The rear three seats are expected to be removed from the standard configuration, which will accommodate a snack bar at the back of the plane.
United has more than 1,100 active airplanes in its fleet, and close to 600 on order, with an outline of its narrowbody fleet below as per ch-aviation:
With production challenges facing the MAX 10 aircraft deliveries, United has been considering converting some of its order for the type to the MAX 8 and MAX 9 it already has in operation. United utilizes its narrowbody aircraft to fly its extensive domestic and short- to medium-haul international routes across the Caribbean and Latin America.
For United, its delivery of the 69th and 70th A321neo is still a long way to go, with another 135 on order; however, these planes are the latest chapter in the airline’s ambitious fleet development strategy and further cement the airline as a leading global airline with the world’s largest fleet of aircraft.
