The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) announced that airspace security was repeatedly violated during former US President Donald Trump’s stay at his Mar-a-Lago residence for Thanksgiving celebrations, and that fighter jets were scrambled multiple times for emergency response.
In the statement released by the agency, it was noted that nine airspace violations were detected between 25–30 November, and in seven of these incidents NORAD responded with fighter jets.
Jets Fired Flares to Warn Pilots
According to officials, in one incident NORAD fighter jets used warning flares to draw the attention of the pilots of a civilian aircraft that had entered the restricted area over Palm Beach. After the intervention, the aircraft was safely escorted out of the area.
Airspace Restrictions Activated When Trump Is at Mar-a-Lago
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) implements temporary flight restrictions (TFRs) every time Trump is at his expansive Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. These restrictions apply to all aircraft, including commercial aviation and general aviation.
Officials emphasised that the rules are clearly communicated to pilots, yet violations increase every year during the holiday season.
More Than 40 Interceptions: NORAD on High Alert
A NORAD spokesperson stated that more than 40 incidents involving violations of flight restrictions in the West Palm Beach area have been intercepted by fighter jets since the presidential inauguration in January 2025.
The Command noted that most of these interventions stem from civilian flight errors caused by inattention, but that each violation is handled within the framework of potential threat assessment.
