The Data4Safety (D4S) program, launched by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), continues to grow as part of efforts to enhance aviation safety. The program has expanded to include nine new EASA Member States and the first eight airport members. This development coincides with the program’s recognition by an industry award, further cementing its global reputation.
What is Data4Safety?
Data4Safety operates as a voluntary collaboration project between EASA, member states, and the aviation industry. The program collects aviation data to proactively identify and manage safety risks. This data, ranging from safety reports and flight data to air traffic management and weather information, is analyzed using big data technologies and data science methods.
EASA Executive Director Florian Guillermet emphasized that the program elevates EASA’s collaboration with the industry in terms of data sharing and analysis, offering a modern, data-centric safety management model.
Awards and Expansion
The program’s second General Assembly was held in Cologne on September 25, 2024. During this meeting, Data4Safety was awarded the Jerome Lederer Safety Leadership Medal by the Flight Safety Foundation (FSF), recognizing its contributions to global aviation safety.
Additionally, new members of the D4S platform experienced the advanced big data technologies firsthand. The program continues its mission to transform aviation safety data into actionable safety intelligence. Data4Safety aims to enter its operational phase by 2026.
Objective: A Safer European Aviation
Launched in 2015, the Data4Safety initiative continues to expand in its mission to strengthen safety within the European aviation industry. The new members include countries like Austria, Belgium, Finland, and Italy, along with major airports such as Brussels, Munich, and Milan. The program remains dedicated to promoting a data-driven approach to aviation safety across Europe.
