American Airlines is set to fly its largest aircraft on a popular domestic route this coming September, as the Fort Worth-based airline schedules a one-time Boeing 777-300ER from New York to Dallas. This will be a unique opportunity to fly, experience, or see the flagship aircraft on this domestic flight.
The route is usually not flown by an aircraft of this size, with American typically deploying its narrowbody Boeing 737 or other aircraft on the four-hour flight between New York and Dallas/Fort Worth. The reasoning behind AA scheduling this aircraft on this route remains unclear; however, it is usually done for the likes of maintenance, repositioning, training, or charter.
American Airlines Will Fly The 777-300ER From New York To Dallas/Fort Worth
American usually reserves its flagship widebody aircraft for long-haul international services from its key hubs to destinations around the world; however, in September, a unique one-off, four-hour domestic route will feature the airplane. As reported by Aeroroutes, AA will fly the widebody airplane from New York JFK Airport (JFK) to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) on Thursday, September 24.
The airplane will not immediately return, with the scheduled return flight set for Monday, September 28, signalling that the plane could be headed for Texas for maintenance. American operates a total of 20 of these airplanes, with 18 active and another two parked. They have an average age of approximately 12 years and are half the age of their other Boeing 777-200 airplanes.
Simple Flying reached out to American for insight as to why this plane is scheduled to fly domestically; however, an airline spokesperson could not immediately be reached.
Operating Domestically As AA1953 And AA2464 In September
Looking closer at the airline’s schedule, American will send its 777-300ER between New York and Dallas/Fort Worth on September 24, with the plane pushing back from the Big Apple at 4:15 PM as flight AA1953. The aircraft will then fly the 1,589.2 miles (2,557.5 km) flight, which has an approximate flight time of three hours and 54 minutes. Scheduled arrival in Dallas/Fort Worth is reserved for 7:12 PM.
The return flight is planned for four days later, where the widebody will operate as AA2464, departing from Dallas/Fort Worth at 11:21 AM, to cover the journey back to New York. With an estimated flight duration of three hours and eight minutes, this shorter return hop will have the aircraft arriving in NYC at 4:00 PM, where it would then be expected that the aircraft will be scheduled back into its usual long-haul international schedule.
International long-haul routes served from JFK include Buenos Aires (EZE), New Delhi (DEL), London Heathrow Airport (LHR), Madrid (MAD), Milan Malpensa (MXP), Paris Charles De Gaulle Airport (CDG), Sao Paulo (GRU), Tokyo Haneda (HND), Athens (ATH), Barcelona-El Prat Airport (BCN), Rio de Janeiro (GIG), and Rome Fiumicino (FCO).
It has eight international and three domestic routes through February.
