The U.S.-based think tank Center for a New American Security (CNAS) has published a comprehensive report addressing the market for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and armed unmanned aerial vehicles (UCAVs). The report highlights Turkey’s significant strides in recent years, establishing itself as the leading supplier of armed drones worldwide.
U.S. Dominance Fades, Turkey and China Rise
According to the report, the U.S.’s global dominance in drone technology has diminished. Turkey and China, in particular, have emerged as frontrunners, thanks to their success in developing cost-effective and efficient military drones. The CNAS report points out that the U.S. has limited its drone exports due to its adherence to the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR), leading to a decline in its market influence. In contrast, Turkey and China have rapidly increased their market shares.
Turkey’s Bayraktar TB2 Success
The report emphasizes the high demand for Turkey’s Bayraktar TB2 model worldwide. In 2022, six new countries purchased military drones, all of which acquired the Bayraktar TB2 from Turkey. The military successes achieved in Libya, Karabakh, and Ukraine have further strengthened the effectiveness and international reputation of Turkey’s drones.
Rapid Growth of Drone Use in Africa
The report indicates a significant increase in the use of unmanned aerial vehicles in Africa. Since 2020, the transfer of armed drones to the region has accelerated, with the Bayraktar TB2 becoming one of the most preferred products in this market. Between 1995 and 2019, the annual average number of drone transfers was two, but this figure rose to 13 per year starting in 2020.
Turkey Dominates the Drone Market
The report reveals that since 2018, Turkey has sold a total of 69 armed drones to 40 different countries, alongside China and the U.S. Turkey, having completed 65% of these sales, leads the market by a wide margin, while China holds a 26% share. The U.S., on the other hand, lags behind with just 8%. Turkey’s short delivery times and the proven battlefield success of its products are cited as key reasons for its popularity.
The Rise of Loitering Munitions
The report also highlights the increasing use of loitering munitions. These munitions, used notably during the 2020 Karabakh War, have garnered significant international attention since the conflict. Turkey’s innovative technologies in this area are further solidifying its leadership in the drone market.
